Learning to Read

Reading with ease requires skills in decoding, comprehension, and fluency:

  • Through Orton Gillingham, Wilson, and REWARDS, students internalize phonetic patterns to decode with ease.

  • Analyzing literary elements and evaluating evidence in texts aids comprehension across genres. Vocabulary study emphasizing root words and etymology strengthens understanding through phonology, morphology, and semantics.

  • Teaching fluency strategies melts barriers as students experience an increased desire to read for pleasure.

Learning to Write

Strong writing requires direct instruction:

  • Good writing requires and understanding of sentence, paragraph, essay, and narrative structure.

  • Judy Hochman’s “Teaching Basic Writing Skills” program illuminates the steps of clear expository writing.

  • Systematic steps teach grammar and structure, allowing students to create coherently organized works for testing, entrance essays, and beyond.

Learning to Think Mathematically

Mathematics education requires an understanding of neurodiversity:

  • Auditory, visual, and kinesthetic learners process mathematical principals differently.

  • How students understand themselves as learners affects confidence in math, and confidence plays a greater role in mathematics achievement than raw ability.

  • Math confidence is a skill that can be taught. Through TERC Investigations, Singapore Math, Saxon Math, and hands-on explorations, students build the skills and confidence they need to succeed.

Testimonials

Anna has tutored my 7th grade dysgraphic son for two years, collaborating with me and with his classroom teachers to support him with writing composition and spelling. I recommend her highly to any family seeking a reliable and experienced writing tutor. Anna is not only reliable and experienced, but also patient and understanding.  My son told me that knowing he has a tutoring session with Anna takes the stress out of the assignment because he knows that Anna will help him formulate his thoughts, thread his ideas together, and be more precise with his word choice in order to end up with a piece of writing that reflects the quality of his thinking and that he is proud of. We feel lucky to have found Anna. She is a big part of my son’s education, and the reason for much of his growth as a writer and speller.     ~ Bree D.

We had the good fortune to have Anna as our reading teacher through Churchill’s Reading Initiative.  My daughter who is dyslexic connected with Anna immediately and after she completed the program at Churchill we continued to engage Anna as a private tutor for two years.  Anna is warm, understanding and creative in her approach to teaching special needs students.  To this day we still have the board game that my daughter and Anna created together as a fun tool to strengthen her reading and decoding skills.  Anna is a knowledgeable and gifted teacher who is able to assess student’s needs and develop a strategy to best serve their growth.  We are grateful to have had Anna as our daughter’s teacher and tutor.        --Jennifer S.
